Magnesium Supplements
Magnesium is an essential mineral that contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, normal muscle function and the normal functioning of the nervous system. Charava makes two magnesium supplements for South Africa, both in capsules and delivered from Johannesburg.
Magnesium glycinate or magnesium complex?
- Magnesium Glycinate: a single, gentle form. Each capsule provides 500mg magnesium glycinate (100mg elemental magnesium). Many people take it in the evening. Vegan and halal.
- Magnesium Complex: three forms in one daily serving of 2 capsules (glycinate, citrate and malate), plus vitamin D3. The vitamin D3 is cholecalciferol from a non-vegan source, so Magnesium Complex is not suitable for vegans and not halal.
Magnesium FAQs
Which magnesium supplement should I choose?
If you want one well-tolerated form, choose Magnesium Glycinate. If you prefer a blend of glycinate, citrate and malate in one serving, choose Magnesium Complex. Both contain magnesium, so take one or the other, not both, unless a healthcare professional advises it.
How much magnesium do adults need?
The reference intake (NRV) for adults is 375mg a day, including magnesium from food. Do not take more than the dose on the label.
Can magnesium upset the stomach?
High doses of magnesium can cause loose stools in some people. Taking it with food and staying within the label dose usually helps.
Who should speak to a doctor first?
People with kidney problems, anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding, and anyone taking medication. Magnesium can reduce the absorption of some antibiotics, osteoporosis medicines and thyroid medicines, so a pharmacist may advise taking them at different times of day.
